Hotel: Murder Mystery · The story

Paris, 1920: a body in the penthouse suite

Paris, 1920. A guest lies dead upstairs in a grand hotel, the evidence points at you, and the gendarmes are already on their way. Ride the lift to the suite, break the alibis and name the killer within the hour.

In short: In a luxury Paris hotel in 1920, a stalled lift leaves your party as the prime suspects in the murder of the penthouse guest. With the gendarmes on their way, you have one hour to read the evidence, break the suspects’ alibis and expose the true culprit.

Paris, 1920. Behind the gilt and marble of a luxury hotel favoured by politicians and VIPs, an evening apéritif ends with a body.

You were in the hotel’s ornate lift when it shuddered and stopped dead between floors. A little quick thinking got it moving again.

When the doors slid open, the occupant of the penthouse suite had been killed, and you were the first faces anyone saw. Sacrebleu: the frame fits you perfectly.

The gendarmes are en route. Go up to the victim’s suite, read every clue, weigh up each suspect and pull their alibis apart.

You have sixty minutes to unmask the true culprit and prove your innocence. Miss, and the next room you see has bars on the window.

Unmask the culprit before the handcuffs click.

What to expect

Gilt, velvet and a police notice on the door

Hotel: Murder Mystery was built as a period hotel: fan-shaped Art Deco sconces, crystal chandeliers, timber-panelled corridors and numbered suite doors. It plays as a whodunit, so expect as much reasoning as searching.

  • You start in the hotel lift, which has other ideas about reaching your floor
  • Search the suite, study the suspects and test every alibi
  • Winning means naming the right culprit, not just opening the last lock
  • No crawling, tight spaces or smoke, and no jump-scare horror

A grand hotel, made by hand

No part of Hotel: Murder Mystery came out of a box. Escape This wrote the murder, plotted how each clue leads to the next suspect, and built the lift, corridors and suite in its own Perth workshop.

At the 2026 Immersive Experience Awards the result won the Escape Rooms and Puzzle Experiences category, and the judges named it Highly Commended for Production Design and Craft.

Escape This is Australia’s largest escape room operator, and runs its own escape room design studio and escape room factory in Australia.

FAQ

About the case

What is Hotel: Murder Mystery about?

A death in a grand Paris hotel in 1920, and you’re the ones being blamed. Hotel: Murder Mystery is a 60-minute whodunit game at Escape This Perth CBD: your party rides the lift up to the victim’s suite, studies the evidence, tests each suspect’s story and names the real killer before the gendarmes arrive.

Who is the victim in Hotel: Murder Mystery?

The guest staying in the penthouse suite of a luxury hotel that caters to the political elite and VIPs of 1920s Paris. Finding out who wanted that guest dead, and why, is the investigation Hotel: Murder Mystery hands to your party.

Why are the players the prime suspects in Hotel: Murder Mystery?

Terrible timing. In Hotel: Murder Mystery the hotel’s ornate lift jams with you inside, and when you finally get it moving and the doors open, the penthouse guest has been killed. You’re the nearest faces, the frame fits, and the gendarmes are on their way.

How do you win Hotel: Murder Mystery?

Name the true culprit before the hour runs out. Getting through doors isn’t enough in Hotel: Murder Mystery: you must decode the clues, pick apart each alibi and point at the right suspect to clear your names. Guess wrong or run out of time and, in the story, you’re off to prison.

Why is Hotel: Murder Mystery set in 1920s Paris?

Because that’s the golden age of the whodunit. Hotel: Murder Mystery borrows the look of classic detective fiction, with fan-shaped Art Deco sconces, velvet drapes, dark timber panelling and a grand hotel full of secrets, so every clue feels like it belongs to Paris in 1920.

Is Hotel: Murder Mystery an escape room or a murder mystery game?

A bit of both. Hotel: Murder Mystery runs like an escape room: your party alone in a built set, a 60-minute clock, locks and puzzles, and a gamesmaster on hand with hints. The difference is the goal. You win by solving a whodunit and naming the killer, not just by reaching the last door.

Will fans of classic detective novels enjoy Hotel: Murder Mystery?

They’re exactly who it was made for. If you’ve ever shouted a suspect’s name before the final chapter, or own a well-thumbed Cluedo board, Hotel: Murder Mystery lets you be the detective: weighing motives, comparing statements and exposing a liar in a period hotel.

Does the casebook give away who the killer is?

Never. Inspector Brochard records who stepped out of the lift and what they asked at the desk, not the case. The casebook never names, hints at or rules out a suspect, never mentions a clue or a motive, and never says whether any party was right, so Hotel: Murder Mystery stays an open case until you play it.
