Saturday. Two suspects in the lift this afternoon, and only two. A married couple, very well dressed, holding hands in the manner of people who have alibis for each other.
On a Saturday the hotel prefers its suspects in fours or more, when booking ahead on the internet, and six is the most it will ever take. But a pair may telephone on the day, or simply walk in, and if there is an hour free they may have it. These two had telephoned at breakfast. I respect a couple who plan their crimes in advance. Their investigations, I mean.
On other days of the week two is quite enough. Two people can search a suite. Two people can disagree about a suspect. In my experience two people can disagree about anything.
When I reached the suite they were still arguing, very happily. I did not ask about what. They left together, still arguing. That is what is known in the gendarmerie as a successful marriage.
